⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Nowi
Age: Over 1000 years(Appears much younger)
Canon: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Canon Point: Just after the final fight with Grima.

Background:

Very little is known about Nowi's history in canon. We find out from her support conversations that she was born in a far off land, and that she never really knew her parents because she was kidnapped when she was very small. Much of her childhood was spent alone. At some point, she fell into the hands of human slavers and was sold off several times. She was mostly seen as an exotic pet of sorts and made to perform tricks in her dragon form as entertainment. When her most recent masters tired of her, she was sold to the Grimleal, a cult that worships an evil dragon. They intended to use her as a sacrifice, an offering to their dark god. But one of the mercenaries they hired, Gregor, decided to turn on them and rescue her.

Meanwhile, the Halidom of Ylisse was entering reluctantly into a war with the nearby country of Plegia. The Plegian king had kidnapped the Exalt, Ylisse's ruler, and her younger brother was leading his army in an attempt to retrieve her. While crossing the desert, they ran into Nowi and Gregor who were escaping from the Grimleal. Chrom ordered his soldiers to help them, and the cultists were defeated. Nowi and Gregor joined Chrom's army, and traveled with them to Plegia to rescue Emmeryn. It goes very poorly. Their opponents play dirty and it all ends with Emmeryn sacrificing herself so that she could spare Chrom the choice between his sister's life and the safety of their people. This leaves Chrom in control of Ylisse and he mounts a campaign against Plegia that ends with the defeat of Gangrel.

For two years, there was peace, and Nowi was finally able to live freely and make friends just as she'd always wanted. She stayed with the Shepherds, and proved to be very outgoing and often troublesome, but they accepted her for who she was. Naturally such peace wouldn't last forever. Word arrived of a conquering ruler that had already gained control of a whole continent and was crossing the sea with the intent to wage war on Ylisse and her allies. Chrom's shepherds are called into battle again, Nowi included.

They decide to head out and meet Walmart Walhart's army on it's own turf. They recruit allies from some of the smaller countries that have already fallen under Walhart's rule and seek to regain their independence. Perhaps one of their greatest allies is Tiki, a prominent religious figure and fellow manakete. Much older than Nowi, Tiki had been around since the time of the first Exalt and proved invaluable to their future success. (Mostly because she told them how to complete the Fire Emblem) Walhart is eventually defeated.

Peace now? No. Early in the conflict with Walhart it was revealed that Chrom's daughter from the future had come back in time to stop a terrible tragedy from ruining the future world. It turns out that Plegia's new rulership is somehow worse than it's last, and is trying to resurrect the Fell dragon, Grima. (Remember those cultists from before? Yeah, this is their dark god.) Everyone's future children had come back in time to stop it from happening. It's through these time travel shenanigans that Nowi got to meet her future daughter, Nah. (I'm leaving the identity of Nowi's husband vague, in case of future apps. But if it is necessary for me to pick one of the guys, I have no problem with that.) While Nah was somewhat exasperated with her mother's carefree, childish nature, the two actually got along quite well.

In order to stop Grima from destroying the world, Chrom begins preparing for the awakening, a ritual which will allow him to channel the power of Naga to defeat Grima. (Naga is the good Dragon god that provides the requisite counterpart to Grima) But they need the completed Fire Emblem. Which would have been a lot easier without an avatar of Grima playing weird mind control games with Chrom's tactician, Robin. But because this could take forever and has very little to do with Nowi, here's the short version: Robin turns out to have been born to be a vessel for Grima. This allows the dark god to exercise some control which almost costs them the Emblem. But they get it back and complete it in time to perform the awakening. Huzzah!

But now they have to fight Grima and they learn they have a choice. Either use the power Chrom gained from Naga to put Grima into a deep sleep, or sacrifice Robin's life to kill the Fell Dragon outright. At everyone's urging, Nowi included, Robin is convinced not to make the Sacrifice. After all, it was their bonds that got them all this far. They just had to trust in those bonds to see them through in the future as well. In the end, Nowi fought bravely alongside Chrom's army and together they defeated Grima.

If that's too wordy, just check this link here.

Personality:

Even though she's over a thousand years old, Nowi is very childish. She laughs easily, cries easily, and doesn't worry at all about appearing mature or dignified. She spends most of her time playing games like hide and seek or trying to give dragon rides to children in nearby villages. When she doesn't get her way she pouts and whines. Very persistently. And it usually works. She manages to convince Ricken to lie to Chrom so she doesn't get into trouble, and is even able to pester Lon Qu into playing house with her. Unfortunately, she has a bit of a problem remembering her own strength. Her favorite game, 'duck duck dragon' very nearly kills Virion. And she'll use her dragon fire for things like cooking, even though all that does is char the food. In her first sparring match with Cherche, Nowi sends her flying with a strike from her tail. Although none of this was mean spirited and in every case she was quick to apologize. But if something bores her, she's not shy about telling you. She tells Nah flat out that studying looks like 'the opposite of fun.' She also asserts with complete confidence that playing is her job in Chrom's army.

But despite being slightly bratty, she's also really kind and considerate. She finds an injured bird and insists they use an expensive healing staff to help it. She uses her own scales to make armor for Gregor, so he'll be better protected on the battlefield. And when she's playing games with Cherche she tries to come up with games that would allow Cherche's wyvern, Minerva, to join in so they can all have fun together. She decides that Frederick's skills are unappreciated so she makes sure to tell him he's 'the best knight ever.' After all, she loves being praised, so naturally he will too. When she learns that Libra is having trouble making friends, she very helpfully drags him around to each person in the army until he's met them all. Kellam's loneliness even inspires her to try to be his big sister because she knows exactly how it feels to be alone.

Although Nowi clearly enjoys being a dragon, there are some drawbacks. She's acutely aware of the difference between her lifespan and that of her human friends. While she's already over a thousand, most of her friends aren't likely to live past a century. There is nothing Nowi fears more than loneliness, something that is a recurring theme in many of her support conversations. When she was a child, there were times when she was alone for so long that she began to wonder if she was the only one left in the world. This is a feeling that she's never forgotten. She even admits having nightmares about it. As such, she gets pretty attached to her friends. Her behavior often borders on clingy, following people around and pestering them for attention. Even the little bird that she nursed back to health is important to her. When it leaves to rejoin it's flock, she cries because she'll miss it so much. And in her solo ending, she tries to live away from humans but winds up missing them and coming back.

But as childish and clingy as she is, Nowi can also be very wise. She's able to recognize that Nah is too young and inexperienced to use dragonstones very often, and even helps her to find other ways to train. And she's very willing to learn new things herself. She happily takes hunting tips and cooking lessons from Robin. And even after being used and abused by human slavers for years, Nowi is still able to trust humans as a whole. She doesn't hold any grudges and doesn't judge her new friends for what other members of their race had done. When a fellow manakete, Tiki, approaches her about the trouble with having so many friends with such short life spans, Nowi is able to give her a new perspective on it. Tiki tells Nowi of her belief that people who have died become stars in the heavens, so stargazing always makes her sad. But Nowi finds the idea comforting. She tells Tiki that it should make her happy, because it means she gets to see all of those friends every single night. So it's like they never really left.

Abilities:

She's a manakete, also known as a dragon. (The terms are used interchangeably in the game) Besides a greatly increased life span and better stamina than her human friends, what this means is that she can turn into a dragon. Wings, scales, fire breath, etc. To facilitate this transformation, small objects called dragonstones are used. Her dragon form is not terribly large however, being roughly fifteen feet from nose to tail.

She's also got fantastic aim when throwing rocks. You know.... in case that ever comes up...

Alignment: Daimonia

Nowi is joyful much of the time. Even when she becomes sad or depressed, cheering her up is as easy as playing a game, telling a story, or giving her candy. And given her fear of loosing those close to her, she's also no stranger to grief.

And here's the emotion scene:

Ugh... I'm so boooored....

[Flopped down on a park bench, Nowi is the very picture of grumpy boredom. The picture is enhanced by several dark clouds hovering in her vicinity, growing ever larger. Is it possible to die of boredom? She's pretty sure she's about to find out.

She also fondly imagines that, after her imminent death, everyone will be very sorry they couldn't be bothered to play with her. But her thoughts are interrupted by a ball rolling up to the bench, a young girl following closely behind it. Nowi perks up immediately.]

Hey! What game are you playing? Can I play too?

[And how could the girl say no when Nowi's hopeful eyes are sparkling at her? And those same sparkles burst into a shower around the little dragon when the girl nods. And the two scamper off to join the game.]

Questions: Nope!
